random musings of just another computer nerd

w00t

You know what’s so sweet? I am using Winamp to make an http connection to my FreeBSD machine to access music that’s on my XP machine through an SMB share. So my music goes from my XP machine through the SMB share to my FreeBSD machine and from there over the internet through a symlinked directory in my pub folder to arrive at my laptop. So Schweeet! I can access my entire music collection!

Upgraded to FreeBSD 5.2.1-RELEASE

I upgraded my server OS to FreeBSD 5.2.1-RELEASE. It was painles… ok I won’t lie… it was mostly painless. With me, nothing ever goes according to plan.

Anywaym things look good for now. Hopefully this will get rid of those annoying kernel panics when I transfer large files. I hear that issue was fixed in 5.1. Since I was running 5.0-RELEASE, obviously I had the issue. I hope everything works now.

FreeBSD is really amazing.

So many toys!

Woohoo! I love the Friday after Thanksgiving. I got my self two 256Mb RAMBUSes and also a 160Gb HD. All for a schweet, schweet price! Now my machine is running with 768Mb of RAM. I am so tempted to go up to 1Gb! I am going to put the 160Gb in my WinXP machine. And keep the 75Gb in there too. I still have a 512Mb SIMM lying around and also two 64Mb RAMBUSes. Maybe I should put the RAMBUSes in the FreeBSD machine and the 512Mb into the new server that I want. SCHWEETNESS!

Ugh. Back to school. I wish I was still in Cali. I built 3 computers in two days. Can’t wait for the semester to be done!

FreeBSD 5.0

Installed FreeBSD 5.0. Of course, nothing went as planned. I downloaded the ISO’s and burned them, but the CD’s turned out to be worthless as they wouldn’t boot. Don’t know why. So I ended up with a couple of coasters. I decided to do it instead through FreeBSD. It worked this time. Got my system pretty much the way it was under 4.7. I still have to set up CUPs. I did get Samba working again. Although, I should document my work a little better. It would be easier… especially with Samba… I spent 15 minutes trying to work out a kink… My quick and dirty journal file only had the remark “search the web for relevant documentation”. It took some time to find what I was looking for. Well, anyway… it looks like it’s working great…

Semester Done

The semester is over. Had my CSE 421 final yesterday. I’m a true CSE major now. I really miss that class. It was an awesome experience. Got CUPS working on my FreeBSD machine. I can print to my Windows shared printer. I also have OpenOffice installed. Trying to get the CrossOver plugin to install Trillian. Leaving for California on the 19th. After that I leave for India on the 21st. Can’t wait…

FreeBSD

I’m thinking of putting up a FreeBSD Journal here. I’m having a hard time remembering all the different things I’ve done to get my machine customized. It would help if I kept track of all the things I did. Plus, it will be a good resource…

FreeBSD Error Message

I thought this was a cute error message:

Unable to go to your saved /etc directory in ?! Argh! Something went seriously wrong! It’s quite possible that your former /etc is toast. I hope you didn’t have any important customizations you wanted to keep in there.. :(

FreeBSD machine configured

My FreeBSD machine is configured to the Cisco 678… I just need to figure out how to configure sharity light again… Hmm… Oh yeah, I took out the 20Gb harddrive from the XP box and put it into the FreeBSD box. FreeBSD recognizes it. No surprise.

Cisco 678

Got my Cisco 678 modem today. It’s set up and seems to be running fine. Ran into a few quirks (why does this always happen to me?) but ironed it all out. Need to configure my FreeBSD machine now.
